Fashion 4 Development

Autumn was thrilled to be invited to offer her on-going support and knowledge by sitting on the committee of an initiative called Fashion for Development (F4D). Fashion for Development focuses on United Nations Millennium Development Goals of (1) ending poverty and hunger (2) achieving gender equality and empowering women and (3) creating global partnerships through the expression of fashion that supports economies.

In association with the South South News (the official media outlet of the United Nations), F4D aims “to implement creative strategies seeking the sustainable development and economic independence of women”. The goal of Fashion for Development is to create infrastructures for apparel production in developing countries on the African continent in order to inject these economies by utilizing local skilled artisans. F4D’s first event to attract global awareness was the First Ladies and Fashion for Development Luncheon which took place at The Waldorf Astoria on September 19th during UN General Assembly week, and just after New York fashion week. The goal of the premiere luncheon, where the initiative was presented to various the First Ladies of the World (president’s wives), Top Tier UN officials, Ambassadors, policy makers, philanthropists, business titans, political scholars, Nobel Laureates, fashion designers, exexcutives, and influencers as well as extensive media) was to introduce the initiative on as broad a scope as possible. The event was a huge success and Italian Vouge’s Editor-in-Chief, Franca Sozzani accepted an award for her newly appointed role as F4D’s ambassador.
